Where the Lines Don't Run

Tessa's life has been a lot of things. Easy isn't one of them. Whether abandoned at a young age, or an orphan, it's all the same to her. She's had to make her own way in an America struggling through The Great Depression.

She tramps the lines to The Sunnydale Children's Home, shoes lace-less and chip bundled carefully to her shoulder. The home is crowded, but she worms her way into a room with Eddie, a boy who "Don't move or talk."

Tessa bungles relationships, finding it easier to interact with Eddie. She cares for him, carves a friendship with him. In the process she begins to mend, exchanging nails for brass buttons, and her "old rot sweater" for hope.

Life is a funny thing, full of surprises and never as "happily ever after" as the fairy tales. Tessa wrestles through with more spit flying than a spitbug, more gumption than crickets on a hot summer night. The trials are many, the triumphs greater. Time spent with Tessa and Eddie will not soon be forgotten.
